The $24,000 question about pedestrian-only Main St. has always been how employees, visitors and Old Town residents get in and out. And there is an abundance of speculative answers such as remote parking, busing, resident permits, enforcement, China Bridge modification, etc. etc. -- but nobody really knows what would happen, and the stakes have always been too high to invite experimentation.
Well, the stakes are artificially lower now, because we have to go slowly and deliberately according to public health orders. So, why is this not a great time to experiment with all those ideas and proposals?? Would we not learn some valuable things??
Let's not forget the broad community support for pedestrian Main St. expressed during Vision 2020. At some point in the future when things are back to "normal" including all the congestion, chaos, complaining and anxiety and Main St., we will wish we had used this time in active exerimentation rather than hand-wringing.
