1. The affected residents were not polled or considered in this decision. We only found out at the last minute by accident.
2. We do ride the bus to avoid adding traffic to the mess on busy days.
3. The options considered do not include options that still allow some bus service on Royal (eg a one-way loop)
4. On-demand will not be used.
I sent an e-mail to Sarah Pearce a bit earlier today (attached below), outlining a potential solution that I thought might work for Royal Street. I don’t have all the scheduling specifics, but thought some service on Royal Street could be accommodated. I hope that you will consider reinstating some service on Royal Street serving our community among others. Thank you for your time.
Excerpt from Sarah Pearce e-mail: I would like to suggest that you consider adding at least a variable one -way route on Royal Street. In the mornings, the Orange Bus could leave the OTTC and go straight up Marsac to Silver Lake which addresses the desire for many riders (likely individuals going to work or skiing) for a faster route. The bus could then go down from Silver Lake to Snow Park on Royal Street and then on to the OTTC. Based on the 9-minute travel time, it appears the Orange Line could stay on a one-half hour frequency, as it does now. In the afternoon, the Orange Line would reverse direction and go from the OTTC to Snow Park and up to Silver Lake. From Silver Lake, it would provide direct service down to the OTTC, thereby satisfying the desire for (workers and skiers) a direct route and the efficiencies it provides. I believe that this routing should at least be implemented on a trial basis, perhaps through the upcoming holidays.
While this proposal does not replace the service that has been discontinued, it does provide a more reliable option as opposed to the On-demand service. At least with an effective hourly scheduled service on the portion of Royal Street that is not currently serviced, one could get from stops on Royal Street to the OTTC, Snow Park and Silver Lake.
The staff report totally ignores the riders, lots of them, who have gotten on the Orange bus at SnowPark for years during ski season to get to Sliverlake. With no free parking at SilverLake or the transit center the only way to get to the businesses, restaurants and lodging at SilverLake is to park at SnowPark and ride the bus. These business generate huge tax revenues. Btw, Taking a bus down to the transit center and switching is too long and for those in ski boots with skis/ poles not practical. Please reinstate the Orange route up Royal.
